Sustainable Tourism: A Path for Albania’s Future

A recent study visit to Slovenia offered an inspiring glimpse into how sustainable tourism can shape the future of Albania. Participants from Korça, Gjirokastra, and Saranda, representing local institutions, tourism operators, and Destination Management Organisations (DMOs), gathered in Ljubljana and Bohinj to exchange knowledge and best practices. The visit was part of the Youth Employment Project, supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and implemented by Helvetas & Partners Albania, in collaboration with the Embassy of Slovenia in Albania and the Slovenian Ministry of Economy, Tourism and Sport.

Slovenia, widely recognized as a European model for green tourism, provided a rich learning environment. The delegation explored how the country integrates sustainability into every layer of its tourism strategy—from national policies to grassroots initiatives. A key takeaway was the importance of involving local communities, citizens, and businesses in shaping tourism that respects both people and the planet. This inclusive approach ensures that tourism development benefits everyone and preserves cultural and natural heritage.

Another major insight was the role of sustainability standards and certifications. Whether through national frameworks or international recognition, these benchmarks help destinations stay accountable and transparent. Equally vital is the collaboration between public and private sectors. Strong DMOs, backed by shared visions and long-term strategies, are essential for building resilient tourism ecosystems that can adapt and thrive.

Slovenia’s success story proves that sustainable tourism is not only achievable, but it’s indeed a winning formula for the future. Albania, with its rich cultural landscapes and growing tourism potential, is well-positioned to follow this path. By embracing sustainability, fostering partnerships, and empowering local actors, Albania can create a tourism model that is both economically vibrant and environmentally responsible.
